Linguistics Unlimited

In the information technology era, sharing of information is the most crucial need of modern humanity. While the general public has learned to share information abundantly on the internet, this is not the case in the scientific world. We think that open access scientific information sharing will be the revolution of a new reality. Information economy will be centred on collaborative production and the free sharing of scientific information that will benefit everybody.

Linguistics Unlimited © is a peer-reviewed, independent open-access journal in the field of Linguistics. This is a journal with the strong conviction that research should be free from commercial interests so that science can flurish based on merit, interest and importance alone. We believe that truly open access is the only way to restore scholarly publishing to its original purpose i.e. to spread knowledge and allow access to such knowledge beyond price barriers, and to increase visibility for research outputs and usage. We want to be the change we want to see, so we aim to be part of reforms that are needed in the research sector. We hope that this cause will be supported by language scientists from around the globe by reading and writing for LU.

The main purpose of the journal is to establish a free research platform for linguists to present their research and work in progress, to disseminate new ideas and ultimately, to shape research in the field.

Closing Down

Dear all

The editorial board of LU has decided to terminate LU's activity and close the journal and website down. The reasons for this decision are the following. Although we have published 2 papers, the submission rates for LU are very low or often of very low quality (which we reject of course). We have tried over the years to attract publications but this has been proved a very difficult task. Firstly, I, personally, am outside academia and as a result, there isn't much I can do to attract submissions. The other editors, all engaged in academia and in a better position to utilise their networks, are very busy people, as you know, and they cannot always dedicate time to this activity. Finally, the bigger reason is really the current affairs of publishing in academia and the fact that people are 'chasing' big and well established journals with high impact factors, thus leaving smaller journals totally out the game. You will know all this yourselves, already.

We have explored some other options for LU i.e. folding into a larger publishing company, or one of the other editors taking it over under the auspices of their university. Again, these options didn't materialise, and with regret we have now decided to proceed with the closure. It is a real shame, considering the amount of work we all have put into this effort and the open access values and principles of LU. More importantly, we all feel we are letting you, the authors and readers of the journal, down by proceeding with this decision, but I am afraid we don't have any other options.

We will proceed with shutting down soon after January. In the mean time, please get in touch if you have any questions.

As always, thanks a lot for all your support and for putting your trust in us.
